Shoulder pain: mobility and gentle strength
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which is also why it's easily irritated. Many problems improve by restoring movement and strengthening the shoulder blade area.
Work below the pain threshold and, at first, avoid overhead movements if they bother you.
Sample plan
Session 1
- Pendulum: lean on a support, let your arm hang and make small circles · 2 sets × 30 s
- Standing shoulder blade squeeze · 2 sets × 12 reps
- Arm circles · 2 sets × 20 s
- Wall push-ups · 2 sets × 8 reps
Key tips
- Relax your neck: shoulders away from your ears.
- Slow movements within a comfortable range.
- If sleeping on that shoulder hurts, try the other side.
⚠️ Seek care right away if you notice
- You can't lift your arm after a fall.
- The shoulder looks deformed.
- Left shoulder pain with chest pressure, shortness of breath or cold sweat: it may be a heart problem, call emergency services.
- Fever with a red, hot shoulder.
